Summer Bootcamp

Overview

According to a 2016 survey conducted by the Education Sector Support Programme in Nigeria (ESSPIN), despite the efforts of international development partners and the government to shore up quality, learning outcomes in public schools remain low and appear to be declining. Several factors contribute to the low learning outcomes of children in public schools such as: shortage of well trained teachers, lack of educational inputs/infrastructure, large class sizes to mention a few. Remedial classes during the summer holiday have been adopted in recent times as a panacea for the learning gaps of students. However, the benefits of these summer classes are most times negligible for varied reasons. Some of the well-structured summer school programs are unaffordable for low-income families and the cheaper options are of poor quality as tutors adopt rote learning techniques which have been proven to limit the learning experience of students.

This programme will ignite an interest in technology driven leadership and encourage participants to continue to learn (lifelong learning) and to adopt sustainable approaches to real problem solving and lifestyle. A core focus of this programme is the reorientation of participants to become ethical leaders driven by a clear understanding of their own values as well as an appreciation for the values of others.

OVERALL GOAL OF THE SUMMER BOOTCAMP

To prepare children from disadvantaged backgrounds for leadership and entrepreneurship through targeted training on leadership, vocational and ICT skills

OBJECTIVES

The Future Leaders Bootcamp programme differs from other summer school activities because it adopts an active learning approach and encourages practical activities rather than passive listening. This approach will help prepare them for a successful future where they are at par with their peers across the Globe. The programme also exposes children to young innovators and creatives leading the technological drive in Nigeria.

At the end of the Future Leaders Bootcamp, learners will be able to:

  • identify and make use of appropriate Information and Communication technology tools to solve everyday problems;
  • develop and publish Web pages using Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)
  • create static webpages that can display information
  • forecast, set SMART objectives, plan effectively and think ahead
  • work cooperatively with children from diverse backgrounds to achieve a common goal
  • develop an aesthetic response to creative arts and the environment
  • confidently express their viewpoints, interact socially with their peers and listen empathetically to others
